Structure Modeling & Mapping

Instructor:   Mangat R. Thapar, Ph.D.

Training Length:            1 day

Description:

This training is hands-on by the participants with brief presentations by the instructor as outlined here. The participants will perform parallel tasks on their laptops with the instructor. Instructor will provide explanations on various aspects of this tool.

The instructor will show how to use this tool and its applications in exploration geophysics and explain all of the methods and options available. Participants will perform structural modeling and mapping utilizing each method included: (a) Fault Polygon modeling - Model a fault polygon for a faulted structure and generate maps during this process ; (b) Structure mapping and volumetrics - Utilize existing structure data and generate mapping and volumetric reports and maps ; (c) Restore Tops method of contouring and volumetrics - Carryout Modeling a faulted structure and using restore top option generate structure map of a faulted structure and compare with structure map without restoring tops, and carry out volumetric mapping reports (c) Gridding and Variogram methods-Perform mapping test on selected structure data using available variograms for kriging mapping algorithm, and generate structure maps using all available mapping algorithms ; (d) Modeling and Mapping Unconformity surfaces- Model unconformity surface  for differnt degrees of dip and generate structure maps for each unconformity model; (e) Modeling and Mapping pinchouts - Model pinchouts  using different surface and generate structure maps for each pinchouty model; (f) Modeling and Mapping seismic statics and mis-ties Model different amount of statics and generate  corresponding structure maps including mis-ties.

Participants will save input data parameters as a database record, and SurferTM files; export the saved images to Powerpoint presentation and also to a word document for writing reports.
